Teaching

If you would have told me that I would be a teacher while I was in high school, I probably would have laughed. And as my chuckles died down I'd wait for you to tell me what I was really going to be when I grew up. But I've come a long way since high school - a very very long way. Even in the past two years I've transformed a great deal, and it's been a positive transformation. Getting out of advertising was probably the best decision of my life. And now, as I face the prospect of having my own classroom I realize that I have soooo much more to learn, so much farther to go. Luckily I'm a fast learner, and having spent 16 years in a classroom, I'm not starting from absolute zero. I actually took to learning about teaching rather quickly. And luckily - incredibly - I passed four TExES tests in one summer. So I'm able to teach elementary, middle or high school. I'm able to teach English, art, or journalism. And having so many options really helps when ...

This isn't going to be a long post. I'm sick so I'll make it short. When I was a freshman, my college wasn't even on the map. When people asked me where I went, and I told them, they looked at me like I said Oz. But now... now everybody knows about "under dog" TCU who won the Rose Bowl. And after tonight... after beating UT... I think it's safe to say that we're permanently on the map. Why eat turkey when you can grill up some Bevo? Happy Frogsgiving everyone.

Digress

As I sit here sipping my Pike's blend and eating baby Kit-Kat's I'm wondering where I went wrong in life. No, just kidding. But seriously, who buys baby candy? If you go to get a Kit-Kat wouldn't  you rather it be full sized? And why do they call that tiny candy "Fun Sized" as if getting less chocolate is somehow a deal. But I digress. You know, it's amazing how much faster time goes by when you have something solid to do. That's exactly why I wrote blogs and drew cartoons in many of my college classes. A word to the wise though, make sure said prof's aren't following you on Twitter where you mention your blog update. College truly ruins everything. High school is a hellish nightmare that entraps you for eight hours a day and then you go to college and you're all like..."oh, I can go home and nap now!" "I have freedom, and an active social life and spare time and a newfound appreciation for Ultimate Frisbee." And s...

Analysis of Gerrit Dou's "Dentist by Candlelight" by Liz Rector '09

Image
The piece I have chosen to analyze is Gerrit Dou’s Dentist by Candlelight. A Dutch painter from the 1600’s, Dou began this piece that explores everyday life in 1660 and completed it in 1665. Painted with oil on oak panel (14x10 in.), the piece, which is mostly bathed in blacks and grays, has an eerie lure to it. Entrapped on the oak is a man with his mouth agape, sitting in a wooden chair, wearing a distinct look of anticipating agony. The man looks to the ceiling, where his eyes are met with an alligator hanging from the ceiling; the alligator’s mouth agape as well, with its underbelly aglow. The dentist holds a single candle to the man’s face with one hand, and with the other holds back the patient’s forehead. A concerned wife stands before the man, holding his hand, which is securely fastened to the arm of the chair. The viewer anticipates action, as the scene seems ready to unfold at any moment. The three people in this situation form a sort of circle through their lit facades and ...
