Tips for Adulting

Image
I was subbing at a local school last week and there was this sophomore kid complaining incessantly. He literally WOULD NOT stop talking... "We only get one week for spring break. But it's just enough time to forget everything that teachers expect you to remember. Spring break should be longer. Summer should be longer." My response: Did you know that once you're done with school you'll never get another spring break or summer break again? You'll just work and work and work until you die. Kid: Lesson? Adulting is hard. So take the advice below. Just do what your boss wants. Always keep an eye out for opportunities: Shop responsibly: Exercise regularly: Utilize all of your skills: Schedule your time wisely: Never run away from your responsibilities: Exercise patience at work: Always remain positive: Take care of your belongings/clothes: Be your own biggest supporter: ...

RAWK Holiday Show Houston

Image
Okay, so I learned a lot during the RAWK Holiday Show (Houston) , which is why I don't consider it a total loss, but it was kind of a disaster, haha. Here's why the holiday show wasn't my speed. 1. The location - the location was a little bit sketch. And when I say a little bit, I mean a lot. Granted, I'm one of those snooty museum types, but there are so many venues in Houston! I would have preferred to be a bit closer to the galleria, and a bit farther from…the hood? I even had a friend who wouldn't come because of the location. Oh well, I survived. 2. The selling of art - I sold so few pieces that it was borderline embarrassing. But the fact of the matter is - people weren't there to buy art! They came to look at the pretty things and leave. I had hoards of people oohing and awing at my table, just to talk to me for ten minutes and then walk away. I sold some stuff, but not enough to justify the amount of time and effort I put into the show. 3. The time...

How to Stop Freaking Out - A Guide by Liz

Okay so all over the internet - and in real life - people are freaking out! Whether it's about finals or Christmas or a mysterious flu-like disease that's killing people in North Houston... the freaking out doesn't need to happen. If you are currently freaked out, or feel as though you will be in the near future, read this quick guide: 1) Odds are that you're thinking too much. Take a minute to shift your focus. Watch an episode on TV, have a mug of Sleepy Time tea, doodle a dragon in your notebook. The more you focus on your freaking out - the worse it's only going to get - so focus on something else. 2) If you can fix what you're freaking out about, do it! If you're worried that you're ill-prepared for a final, go study some more! If you're freaked out about a party you're hosting, plan it out! Maybe the better prepared you are, the less you'll flip your lid. 3) If you're having an existential crisis, please dial 9 now. Just kiddi...

Artistic Advice - for the novice or the expert

Image
I’ve seen a lot as a part-time paint instructor and assistant. And I’ve learned a lot having minored in art at TCU. So I will now proceed to share with you little kernels of my artistic wisdom. Prepare yourself. 1) Over-thinking ruins everything If you’re sitting in front of (or hovering over) your canvas, direly afraid of messing up; you will mess up. Art is instinctual and emotional (unless you are working in a geometric, grid-like or mathematical way). And therefore you must think first with your heart and then with your head (if at all). The less of a crap you give – the better your painting will be. You shouldn’t take things too seriously – even if you mess up. There has been many a time where my screw-ups turned into the best part of my painting. As a painting and art instructor I’ve noticed that it’s when people “lose themselves” in the painting and stop worrying about it so much that they create something great. 2) Acrylic vs. Oil If you...

Twisted

Bad Friend: You know the worst type of friend? The worst type of friend is the kind you confide in, the kind you tell personal things to and then turn around and realize that they are throwing those things back in your face in a spiteful way. That is a mark of a truly twisted person. This person will also not likely take what they are saying into consideration before saying it. They will say what they wish to say without thinking about how those things will affect the receiving party. There can be two reasons why they do this: 1) They are stupid 2) They put themselves first and it's not that they don't know how powerful their words are; they just don't care. Weird Friend: A weird friend is a friend that you know you probably shouldn't be friends with. Say, someone like an old high school teacher. It's probably creepy to be friends with them on facebook and message them 3,000 times. That person is most likely a creepy creeper. Especially if they stalk your bl...
