The Strongest of them All



You may not believe it but people with anxiety problems can be some of the strongest people you've ever met. They have to constantly work at finding the best in situations, they have to be cognizant of their blessings, they have to overcome the fact that their body may be betraying them. They have to take their situations and look past them; they must constantly rise above.

Very likely they will be aware of their surroundings, know who they can count on and when, know their limits better than most and have the intelligence to wrestle with, and rise above, their circumstances.

You may think that anxious people are weak; but you would be wrong.

It is also very likely that their struggles with anxiety have helped mold who they are for the better.

I may be hyper aware but that makes me a great artist. I may think too much but that makes me a wonderful writer. I may obsess at times but that makes me an incredible observer. I may be somewhat emotional but that allows me to connect to others' emotions better. I may not be societies definition of a flawless person but God sees my flaws and uses them to bring Himself glory. I praise God for this life, that at times can seem difficult, because I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that He has a magnificent plan for me.

If you find that you are disadvantaged in some way; don't accept it for face value. Discover how it is a part of what makes you you. Search for how it makes you better and different and beautiful.

Some think that anxiety is a sign of weakness. But there are instances where the person who has dealt with anxiety the most- becomes the strongest of them all.

"Fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand," -Isaiah 41:10

"You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word." -Psalm 119:114

"The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame." -Isaiah 58:11

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed" says the Lord who has compassion on you. -Isaiah 54:10

"The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?" -Psalms 27:1

Things You May Need to Hear

There is a good chance that you need to hear at least one of these things at this moment or throughout the new year: 1. Stop looking at your anger or anxiety as a wall you keep running into. Instead, look closely at the bricks that make up the wall. Attack the wall one brick at a time and watch the wall disappear. 2. Fear is an illusion. When anxiety strikes, you have to lean into it to get out of it. 3. You are where you need to be. Even if you feel stuck, even if you hate it, even if you don't understand it - stop trying to escape, and start asking yourself what you can learn from this. 4. People who don't have a clear sense of their own identity latch on to others. They turn their insecurity into gossip, their anxiety into manipulation, their inferiority complex into sabotage. Analysis of Gerrit Dou's "Dentist by Candlelight" by Liz Rector '09

The piece I have chosen to analyze is Gerrit Dou’s Dentist by Candlelight. A Dutch painter from the 1600’s, Dou began this piece that explores everyday life in 1660 and completed it in 1665. Painted with oil on oak panel (14x10 in.), the piece, which is mostly bathed in blacks and grays, has an eerie lure to it. Entrapped on the oak is a man with his mouth agape, sitting in a wooden chair, wearing a distinct look of anticipating agony. The man looks to the ceiling, where his eyes are met with an alligator hanging from the ceiling; the alligator’s mouth agape as well, with its underbelly aglow. The dentist holds a single candle to the man’s face with one hand, and with the other holds back the patient’s forehead. A concerned wife stands before the man, holding his hand, which is securely fastened to the arm of the chair. The viewer anticipates action, as the scene seems ready to unfold at any moment.
