Living in Texas

Image
One thing's for sure, there is no other state in the US quite like Texas. Enjoy a journey with me through this super-sized southern state with these catchy gifs/images. Texas is a truly odd place. You may live out in the middle of absolutely nowhere, or in the center of a mega-city. I've had the distinct privilege of experiencing both. If you're in the city, you really need to enjoy spending serious quality time with your car. Also, people are really serious about their Texas pride. As a Pittsburgh transplant, what really threw me was the fact that we have a special pledge of allegiance for Texas. One thing's for sure, you don't want to come between a Texan and their pride. This guy insulted Texas: Texans also take their guns really seriously. I personally recommend the Glock 19, but Chuck Norris likes to take it to the next level: It is really…really…really hot. Well, I mean, it snows in the panhan...

Sour Apples

I used to look up at the sky As I lay on my skateboard At the end of the driveway And think to myself That you weren’t that far +++++++++++++++++++++ Highlighter green Apples poured off the trees That lined the drive littering the concrete But I would push them aside Rolling back and forth As I stared at the sky +++++++++++++++++++++ Thinking that this was the same sun That wrapped you in light And even though it was hard Maybe you weren’t that far …Just a sky away ….Not that far apart …Just a plane ride from today And we were connected still Because the clouds that rolled over me in the light of day Would hover over you at night, in the sweet Pennsylvania dark +++++++++++++++++++++ Just nine years old I went where I was told My back on the black sandy surface Of a well-worn skateboard That peeled at the corners Nudging apples out of my way As I rocked back and forth In the burning heat of midday With nothing in me that...

Borger, TX

Three days of driving Three days of riding In the backseat To the middle of nowhere Where the air is brown with dirt Crusted and thick it sits in the cracks of trees and chokes the sun Black mist spews from smoke stacks I climbed a tree wearing white And when I came down My clothes were black From Pittsburgh To this tiny town With no movie theatre And one high school I wanted out of here The Dairy Queen shut down The bowling alley reigned supreme With buzzing neon lights An ancient witness to smoke-filled nights It's where I first felt What it was like To not be able To breathe That was the night that asthma found me And I choked in the dark And panic flooded my heart Here...Take an ice cube to calm down But it didn't and... I couldn't breathe In that place In that town From point guard To the bench Asbestos filled buildings sag in disrepair In the air there's a steady toxic stench Like rotting eggs or burning rubber Cracked side...

Texas Christian University

Image
I go to Texas Christian University...and am proud to say so. The actions of some do not define the mentality or actions of all. I personally have never done drugs, but am not surprised to learn that there's a problem in a college campus. There's a problem on every college campus...but TCU is being made an example of because we are a private Christian college. The former journalist in me knows why this is being so publicized, the former journalist knows that this qualifies as a "good story." And that's a shame. There is a problem on every college campus with illegal substances...and the bigger the school, the more widespread the problem. And here I sit a graduating Senior from a school that's all over the news. And yeah, it pisses me off that anyone would dare tarnish the name of such a great school. It pisses me off that so much has been thrown on Gary Patterson who has been nothing but an extraordinary coach working his heart out to get us on the map. I don...

What to do...

This morning I woke up at eight something, so much for sleeping in late. I laid there in my pink plaid pajama bottoms and pink TCU hoodie, wrapped in a sea of green sheets. I rested my hand on my chest and felt my heartbeat through both layers of clothing. It beat fast, as usual. And I continued laying there, relishing the fact that I didn't have to be anywhere. My obnoxiously squeaky bed screeched in protest as I got up and opened my blinds. This was going to be a day of errands, artwork and reading my media law book. But no matter what exactly I'm doing the realization that I'm nearly half-done with my last year of college is never far from my thoughts. There are so many possible directions for my life to take post-college that it's mind boggling. Haha, that reminds me of last night when I got caught up on an episode of Community I had missed. Ahbed and Troy had a housewarming party and Jeff created six parallel timelines by rolling a die to see who had to go answer t...
