Covert Affairs
I would like to take a second and discuss last night's episode. First off, I want to slap Auggie for interrupting Annie when she wanted to have a heart-to-heart. But the big issue is the fact that Annie was shot by her former boss. The writers of the show really wrote themselves in deep, and it'll be interesting to see how they get her and the other characters out of this situation.
First off, the CIA considers her a traitor, which means she'll have to redeem herself.
Second off, her love is (most likely) dead and she sustained a major trauma which isn't something you can bounce back from easily.
She also destroyed the trust she had with Joan and Auggie by concealing her previous activities. And likewise, trust isn't something easily rebuilt.
I can already see her going into a coma or something and "dreaming" about Auggie. But I'm not sure that's exactly what the audience wants. It seems like a stint to buy the characters more "recovery" time. What I want to know is what was in her former boss' folder that she handed over to Arthur and what repercussions will Lena will face for shooting a CIA operative. I have a hard time believing that anybody ordered that hit and therefore think she was acting on her own. When they find out that Annie is not in fact a traitor, how will crazy Lena be dealt with? Who knows...maybe they'll shoot her? Irony anyone?
Oh yeah...and what was Jai working on in his safe house? It has to be bigger than just Simon Fischer and more complicated than can be wrapped in a few episodes. I think it'll turn into a story arc.
Basically, I didn't see the events of this episode coming, which is both good and bad. That means that the element of surprise is thriving in the writing of Covert Affairs, but it also means that irreparable damage has been done to story and character arcs.
All anyone wants is Annie and Auggie together and there was a lot of potential for that... if only Simon had gotten shot and Auggie had helped Annie put the pieces of her life back together. But she has ultimately lost her place at the CIA and although the series can't continue without her job at the CIA, I see a long road ahead for Annie Walker.
One of the most surprising things about the episode "Glass Spider" is that it really seemed like the kind of cliffhanger that a season would be capped off with. I'm sure the audience will still be left with a cliffhanger at the end of this season however.
Do you think Annie was really ready to walk away from her life and run away with Simon? Personally, I think she cared too deeply about her sister, Auggie and her job to leave it all behind. That girl had a plan... and that plan had four holes put through it... by Lena's gun.
