RAWK Holiday Show Houston


Houstonians, I need your help! The deadline to purchase tickets for the upcoming RAWK Holiday Show is fast approaching - and whatever tickets I don't sell - I have to buy myself. Needless to say, on a teacher's salary, that's no bueno. So if you're a human being that lives in Houston and enjoys having fun, I urge you to buy a ticket to the show!

Details:

* $15 a ticket
* Event is at Stereo Live (10 mins from downtown, 20 mins from Katy)
* Event is December 11 from 7:30pm - 12:00am (stay as long or as little as you want)

* Cocktail attire (skirt/dress for the ladies, button-down shirt (tie) & dress pants for guys)

Why you should go:

+ You're supporting local artists just by showing up
+ It's a great idea for a date night

+You can buy holiday gifts for people!
+My art is not pricey, but it is quality stuff

I am aware that December 11 is a weeknight and this poses an issue for some people. But hey, if you came at 7:30 and left at 8:30, you'd be back in time to go to bed at 9! You can do this :)

To anyone who buys a ticket - I thank you from the bottom of my heart; even if you can't come but you're just buying a ticket so that I won't have to pay that extra $15. This art show is the best birthday gift I could ask for and the only thing that could make it better would be seeing all of your beautiful faces there!

We artists could use all the support we can get, so thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy post. And hey, even if you can't make it to the show, keep in mind that I do commissions  and take requests too!

Things You May Need to Hear

There is a good chance that you need to hear at least one of these things at this moment or throughout the new year: 1. Stop looking at your anger or anxiety as a wall you keep running into. Analysis of Gerrit Dou's "Dentist by Candlelight" by Liz Rector '09

The piece I have chosen to analyze is Gerrit Dou’s Dentist by Candlelight. A Dutch painter from the 1600’s, Dou began this piece that explores everyday life in 1660 and completed it in 1665. Painted with oil on oak panel (14x10 in.), the piece, which is mostly bathed in blacks and grays, has an eerie lure to it. Entrapped on the oak is a man with his mouth agape, sitting in a wooden chair, wearing a distinct look of anticipating agony. The man looks to the ceiling, where his eyes are met with an alligator hanging from the ceiling; the alligator’s mouth agape as well, with its underbelly aglow. The dentist holds a single candle to the man’s face with one hand, and with the other holds back the patient’s forehead. A concerned wife stands before the man, holding his hand, which is securely fastened to the arm of the chair. The viewer anticipates action, as the scene seems ready to unfold at any moment.
