Badass Birthday

Image
You know, this was the first birthday in five years that I haven't spent in Fort Worth, so I was a little worried at how it'd go. Fortunately it was amazing. The people in my life are fantastic and I'm so glad to be where I'm at in life. When I blow out those candles I've wished for the same thing for a decade and it has come true every year. One of the things I love about my birthday is that when it's over (which is kind of sad) all I have to do is remind myself that Christmas is right around the corner. 'Tis the season to be merry. So to myself and all of my good friends who have a December birthday; Merry Birthmas!

Twenty-three I'm so glad to see that number next to my name In the hopes of a year that's not the same As the one that beat me up and ripped me down But now it's my time, this is my town Heavy is the head that wears the crown A hero isn't a hero without a cross to bear And I'm no hero but I'm halfway there

Beyond Belief

What happens when you lose someone? In that moment of loss Who do you become When all you've ever known Is gone And the breath of yesterday is still so strong In your heart and your mind That there is no logic to find The truth in reality It couldn't be time I am still yours And you are still mine It isn't enough To write in a rhyme And describe How half of who you are is gone There is not enough Time in one life to prepare There's not enough tough Inside of you to get there To swallow a reality That you can't bear Beyond belief Is now home What you knew Is now gone And someway You have to Find some Way to Carry On

JAG Fever

Image
I love JAG. I love JAG so much it's not even funny. I've been watching JAG since I was a little kid building Legos on our TV room table. It made me love Harm & Mac and F-14's and the law. My favorite show was on for 10 years and in my mind is a wonderful catalog of every episode and important moment. It was my first TV addiction and my first shipper show, rooting for Harm and Mac. And I really remember all the Christmas episodes and have been missing the show so I thought I'd make a JAG filled blog post. You are welcome. The end of an era: "The final episode, “Fair Winds and Following Seas”, which aired April 29, 2005, saw Harm and Mac assigned different stations: Harm in London, Mac in San Diego. They finally confront their feelings and decide to get married. The episode ends with Bud tossing ADM Chegwidden’s JAG challenge coin to decide who will give up their career to be with the other. However, in keeping with JAG tradition, the

This isn't going to be a long post. I'm sick so I'll make it short. When I was a freshman, my college wasn't even on the map. When people asked me where I went, and I told them, they looked at me like I said Oz. But now... now everybody knows about "under dog" TCU who won the Rose Bowl. And after tonight... after beating UT... I think it's safe to say that we're permanently on the map. Why eat turkey when you can grill up some Bevo? Happy Frogsgiving everyone.
"I've only known you for ... a short while ... but I can say that without a doubt you are the most intelligent, beautiful, talented, and amazing person I have ever met." "But you don't even know me." "You're right I don't...yet. But everyone that does loves you, and that says something."

The Coffee Shop Caper

He was a square man sitting at a square table. His hair was neatly slicked back with what one could assume was a measured squirt of high quality hair gel. His shoes were neatly shined as they were every Tuesday and Thursday and his geometrical red tie neatly disappeared beneath two black lapels. Approximately a half an hour had gone by since Neven sat down at the imitation oak table to sip from, what felt like, a half empty cappuccino. He doesn't use cream and forgot to tell them not to leave room. Which was unlike Neven. He didn't forget things often. His life was remarkably un-remarkable. --- Carlie was fresh out of college. Staring down the barrel of the next forty or fifty work years of her life. It felt daunting to say the least. The only reason she came to this coffee shop was because it is the least scummy place to be in this general area...and she didn't mind the scent of freshly ground coffee beans. The twenty-something had both hands cupped around a half

Twisted

Bad Friend: You know the worst type of friend? The worst type of friend is the kind you confide in, the kind you tell personal things to and then turn around and realize that they are throwing those things back in your face in a spiteful way. That is a mark of a truly twisted person. This person will also not likely take what they are saying into consideration before saying it. They will say what they wish to say without thinking about how those things will affect the receiving party. There can be two reasons why they do this: 1) They are stupid 2) They put themselves first and it's not that they don't know how powerful their words are; they just don't care. Weird Friend: A weird friend is a friend that you know you probably shouldn't be friends with. Say, someone like an old high school teacher. It's probably creepy to be friends with them on facebook and message them 3,000 times. That person is most likely a creepy creeper. Especially if they stalk your bl

My parent's day lasted from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. A long drive in the dark, hours and hours and hours of waiting and treatments and a long drive home during rush hour. For them it was just another trek to MD Anderson. Another day lost trying to attain more days. I'm just so frustrated. Cancer is not something anyone should experience but the fact that it's terminal cancer makes it that much more unbearable. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. There aren't masses of people wearing orange and having fundraisers for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. No specials on TV like there are for breast cancer...no conversation about it. And yet it is a disease that has no solution. You can't cut out your blood...it's not a tumor...it's every cell in your body. I don't understand how we are a society who reinvents electronics every two months, a society that can land on the moon and build engineering feats; and yet we can't cure cancer. And if we could do you t

A Commentary on Kids and Technology

Image
These days technology is everywhere. There is scarcely a moment where you yourself aren't looking at a computer screen or a phone screen or a TV screen. Unfortunately we've become a society that has come to expect constant entertainment. So naturally we as a society are passing down this over stimulation to our kids. Whenever I'm at the mall, or Starbucks, or a public place I will most likely see tiny tots with technology. Mommy and Daddy have started pacifying their kids with their technological devices- iPods, iPads, iPhones, smartphones or laptops.  There are thousands upon thousands of apps in the app store for children, and everyday technological giants are formulating ways to not only create a technological addiction for you, but for your kids as well.  Being in advertising I can easily see through the ploys that convince you that you need a specific device  but not for you, for the "enrichment" of your child. You would do anything for your child

Icarus

Icarus with wings on fire Do you not smell the feathers burning As they take you higher? Only at the height of the blistering skies The blurred mind begins to realize What parable you are Or are you a myth? Thoughts can't breathe here The air grows thin And with a peeling arm held out Embers touch skin Are you falling or flying Will you reach the unreachable Or die trying? Higher, brighter, hotter, lighter Flesh is screaming The height tears at The oxygen in your lungs Vision is blistered and reeling Let the sun Draw you in and Proceed to devour The flesh, bones and blood That only ever sought power Descent is simple All stand and stare With hands dusting The glowing light from their eyes as they watch your rag doll body falling out of the skies Wings are gone charred feathers ascend around the flaming human asteroid floating towards the solid ground.

SafetySuit's song "Let Go," and Jordin Sparks' song "Freeze" get me every time. You know what I realized today? I realized that I listen to music non-stop for eight hours a day, five days a week. It's how I get through the day. But damn, that is a lot of music. I also possess the uncanny ability to know exactly what songs my friends would like, and if they specifically tell me they like a song, somehow I can remember that five years later to make a CD for them. Sometimes I just don't understand my memory. I can forget something that is relatively important but be able to play a conversation back in my mind nearly word for word even if it was from a year ago. And I can remember an episode of Monk from season 1 in 2002. I remember the shoes I wore when I was five and played little league, I remember the story that a sub told us in 10th grade biology about his former life in Poland, I remember the toy I got in a McDonald's happy meal when i wa

As I sit here sipping my Pike's blend and eating baby Kit-Kat's I'm wondering where I went wrong in life. No, just kidding. But seriously, who buys baby candy? If you go to get a Kit-Kat wouldn't  you rather it be full sized? And why do they call that tiny candy "Fun Sized" as if getting less chocolate is somehow a deal. But I digress. You know, it's amazing how much faster time goes by when you have something solid to do. That's exactly why I wrote blogs and drew cartoons in many of my college classes. A word to the wise though, make sure said prof's aren't following you on Twitter where you mention your blog update. College truly ruins everything. High school is a hellish nightmare that entraps you for eight hours a day and then you go to college and you're all like..."oh, I can go home and nap now!" "I have freedom, and an active social life and spare time and a newfound appreciation for Ultimate Frisbee." And s

I would like to take a second and discuss last night's episode. First off, I want to slap Auggie for interrupting Annie when she wanted to have a heart-to-heart. But the big issue is the fact that Annie was shot by her former boss. The writers of the show really wrote themselves in deep, and it'll be interesting to see how they get her and the other characters out of this situation. First off, the CIA considers her a traitor, which means she'll have to redeem herself. Second off, her love is (most likely) dead and she sustained a major trauma which isn't something you can bounce back from easily. She also destroyed the trust she had with Joan and Auggie by concealing her previous activities. And likewise, trust isn't something easily rebuilt. I can already see her going into a coma or something and "dreaming" about Auggie. But I'm not sure that's exactly what the audience wants. It seems like a stint to buy the characters more "recovery&

The Meet

She leaned against the wall, staring at nothing in particular. The surroundings were familiar but from what seemed like another life. She felt the urge to shove her hands in her pockets and rock on her heels but the thin line pencil skirt and glossy navy blue heels prevented it. “What am I doing here?” she breathed to no one, letting out a heavy sigh. There was no answer to that question and that fact bothered her to no end. Maybe there was an answer, but not one she could deal with. Her head hung at a slight angle and her thick brown hair fell around her face. She was so deep in thought that she didn’t hear the quiet footsteps approaching. “Uh… do you work here?” the voice said. She turned with a “no” that dropped from her bottom lip and hung in the air as she spun around and realized who she was talking to. He had been walking towards her but stopped in his tracks. Recognition and shock spread across both of their faces. “Renae,” he nearly whispered.

College Memories Recap

Image
What's one of your best memories involving your friends? First week of Junior year, we had just moved into our apartment and my three new roommates and I didn't know each other very well. Someone (Jessica) popped in the terrible 80s movie Revenge of the Killer Clowns and we laughed and ate popcorn and bonded for the first time.  What was your favorite class? Well...I might have to say painting. I learned so much and those are skills that I can take with me forever. I also loved those professors; a hippie and a sweet southerner. I understood that class, it understood me, I always looked forward to going, and it was relaxing. What was your least favorite class? Boy, it might be a toss up between 3D Design and World Geography. 3D Design was labor intensive, my professor was...a trip...and I could never seem to succeed in that class. World Geo was incredibly labor intensive, was a 3 hour Thursday night class and every time I left I was partially convinced that the w

I think in the shower and take vacations in pints of ice cream. If my mind gets caught in webs of thoughts as I try to fall asleep at night I turn on my other side to swipe them away. The oddest dreams tend to follow me. I set a train of thought in motion in hopes of dreaming of those particular things or people but my dreams never end up there. I don't think I have a good melodic voice but I sing beautifully in paint. Wide strokes of glossy bright paint that have the consistency of melted bubble gum in July swipe across white canvases. There is no time when I paint, reality collapses and expands in waves like the heaving chest of a living animal. Heavy fumes hang in the air around my work and leak out of metal tubes. My hands turn into rainbows, but I try not to let my clothes. I wonder which makes my paintings, my hands or my heart. I am always trying to make sense out of everything; to look far into things I can't yet see. I wonder what it is I can control. I wonder if c

Once Upon A Time

There once was a spider That got lit on fire Maybe not roasted But at least a little toasted Because it has 8 legs And is truly gross A person grabbed a lighter And had a spider roast It's far too furry And has too many eyes And it's revolting demeanor Led to its ultimate demise
