Teacher Tales

Oblivious Spring break: Got my nails done, a keratin treatment for my hair, and my corneas sliced open so lasers could give me perfect vision. A solid week into class: Oh hey Miss …you look different. Are those new shoes? +++ Sweet "Thanks for stepping in and teaching our class this year. It was a terrible situation and you took a big challenge because I know our classes are pretty rough most days. I can honestly say we have all learned a lot more this semester than we did last semester! Thanks for teaching us!" +++ Hilarious *Student looks at class then looks at me*  "How many times a day do you consider hanging yourself with your scarf?" +++ Hilarious Male student: "Man…my stomach hurt so bad today in study hall, I couldn't take it!" *Grabs abdomen* "Is this what it feels like to have a period? Aw man…I couldn't handle it." *Dramatically tumbles to the floor* +++ No Bueno Discovers after clas

Somewhere I Have Never Travelled

The night was muggy. A heaviness hung in the air that wasn't typical to Fort Worth, but the humidity must have followed me here. It was Saturday night, the city was abuzz. And as I walked down the sidewalk I observed the passerby's. Memories of my college years washed over me… seeing plays at the Bass, private shows at McDavid studio, eating lobster at The Chop House, staying at the Worthington Renaissance Hotel, outings with my sorority sisters, pizza and drinks at Uno's, parties at the Flying Saucer.  But I wasn't in town to stroll down memory lane. I was here to get away.  So far my efforts were failing. It may have been a five hour drive to get here, but every stress, every worry, every fear, had followed me here. I came for a distraction, but had yet to find it. Which is exactly why I was making my way towards a nondescript bar with a rich lounge feel.  A sweet melodic sound emanated from the live band and floated through the relaxed atmosphere. Th

The Blacklist: Lizzington

Each week, thousands tune in to watch the hit drama "The Blacklist" on NBC. And everyone who watches the show seems to have some theories about how Red Reddington and Elizabeth Keen are connected. What's interesting to note is that there is a whole community who ships (wants the romantic pairing of) Red and Lizzie. They even have a shipper name: Lizzington! At first I thought this notion was odd, because when the show first aired I had a sneaking suspicion that Red was Lizzie's father. But the more I watch the Blacklist, the less I am convinced of this. As a writer myself, it is always my goal to keep readers guessing. And when the show aired, nearly everyone thought that Red was her father. I think that is what the writers were aiming for, but with a show with as many twists and turns as the Blacklist, it'd be hard to believe that the writers would take such a predictable path. The episode last night really confirmed for me that he is not her father.

My Lasik Experience

My doodle of the human eyeball that I drew the night before surgery First off, I am so beyond proud of myself for being brave and getting lasik. I'm what some might call "a worrier" but on Friday, I became "a warrior" and took the plunge. Before it came time for me to get the actual procedure, I made the call to Berkeley and got in for the exam. It was a lengthy process (3 hours) because I was doing everything all at once so that I could get the surgery the same week. I got about three eye tests and then met with the Lasik counselor. She explained everything about the procedure, the before care, the aftercare, the financing and answered any remaining questions I had. Then I went back for another eye exam with a doc. He dilated my eyes, did another test and gave me the okay to get the procedure. I got "the kit" with the wipes, shields, tape and drops that I would need and my procedure was scheduled for that Friday. It's pretty remark
